The Varsity Tutors Platform gives your student more opportunities to learn at their own pace. 24/7 on-demand chat tutoring and on-demand essay review are live tutoring resources to help your student with any questions about homework, classwork, or test prep. Live group classes, recorded classes, and celebrity-led StarCourses allow your student to learn more about the subjects they’re interested in, and add a touch of fun. Samantha (Hogenson) Bray, Class of 2007
1. What was your favorite thing about MCR-IV?
I could not have asked for a better place to spend my K-12 years. I loved going to the same school with the same kids (and staff, for the most part!) during my formative years. For example, what an honor to have had Mrs. Guilford as my music teacher all 13 years, Mrs. Roberts as my librarian, and Mrs. Amen as both my kindergarten teacher and high school Spanish I-IV teacher (she created Spanish III and IV for me - a perk of being in a tiny school!) I feel like I got a top-notch education, and each teacher cared - a lot - about me and my classmates. I was constantly encouraged and able to take part in all kinds of extra curriculars and opportunities due to the small class sizes.
2. What is your current career? Please share any information about your career and/or the process to get you to that point!
I am a sustainable tourism expert! While at Missouri State University, we had a speaker from the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations. I fell in love with the presented concept of geotourism - tourism that sustains and enhances geographical character of place (environment, culture, heritage, aesthetics, and well-being of residents). I started studying it, and the speaker from NatGeo became my mentor. I also had three fantastic professors at Missouri State who mentored me along the way, keeping me after class to discuss my ideas and encouraging me to get a PhD ("Yeah, right!" I said at the time.)
I ended up going to The George Washington University in Washington, DC, to do a Master of Tourism Administration, with an emphasis in Sustainable Destination Management. During college and grad school, I worked in theaters and performing arts centers (my first love) and did internships at the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, Disney, the American Society of Travel Agents, the National Tour Association, and the NatGeo Center for Sustainable Destinations.
After graduation, I went to work at the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), a nonprofit based in DC, for eight years (though I was remote from Charleston, SC, for six of those years). Our mission was to promote responsible tourism policies and practices to help communities thrive and steward their cultural resources and biodiversity. I was there for eight years, ending as the managing director.
One of my proudest accomplishments was helping to start a destination stewardship council in a rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which reminded me in a lot of ways of home. The community wanted to invite visitors in to experience their beautiful landscape and way of life as jobs dwindled, but they didn't want tourism to change the way of life or hurt the characteristics that made the area so special. So we collected data, worked on a vision together, made a plan, and built capacity for a wide array of community members to implement it. I was also proud to be a founder of the Future of Tourism Coalition, which provides guidance to destinations to ensure impacts of tourism are positive and sustainable instead of negative and degrading.
Most recently, my professors' encouragement came full circle, and I find myself pursuing a PhD in Geography from the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Fittingly, I'm studying the topic of destination stewardship, at the intersection of sustainable tourism, public/private/civil partnerships, and climate action. I did my first semester in person and am able to do most of the rest from home, in Kansas City. I'm on parental leave right now but look forward to diving back in in January.
I feel very lucky to have had the start I had at MCR-IV, and now that I'm back in Missouri, look forward to seeing everyone more often!
